INTRODUCTION:

Increased life expectancy and increase in population, creates high demand in dental care especially in the field of prosthodontics.1  For decades partially edentulous patients are either treated with fixed prosthesis or removable prosthesis. Recently fixed prosthesis is more popular than removable prosthesis due to comfort, function and aesthetics.2 Fixed prosthesis either restored taking support from teeth or using implants. Replacing the anterior teeth with good aesthetics is a complex procedure. It includes fit, shade matching, tooth form and strength. All ceramic restorations are preferred to achieve a life like appearance.3,4  Cad cam restorations are replacing the conventional metal ceramic restoration due to its accurate fit, aesthetics and ease.5,6,7  The awareness of all ceramic restoration in rural population is questionable. Dental practitioners in rural area are also not advising for all ceramic restoration due to cost factor. This study emphasis on awareness of all ceramic restoration and how far people are interested in taking all ceramic restoration as a treatment option for missing tooth in rural area.

MATERIALS AND METHOD:

200 subjects of age group 20-50 years who visited Saveetha Dental College, Chennai were included in the study. Questionnaire contain 20 questions prepared based on this study was circulated among these patients. The questionnaire was prepared with yes, no or no idea type of answers to assess their knowledge about all ceramic restoration as a treatment option for missing tooth.

Bar diagram II shows that how many patient prefer metal ceramic restoration

52% of patient prefer metal ceramic restoration 12% of patient don't prefer metal ceramic restoration because of aesthetic concern 36% of patient has no idea about metal ceramic restoration.

Bar diagram III shows that all ceramic restoration is most aesthetic than other type of restoration

72% of patient says all ceramic is most aesthetic 28% of patient have no idea about aesthetics of all ceramic restoration

Bar diagram IV shows that all ceramic restoration is economic to patient 20% of patient reported that all ceramic restoration is economic to them 68% of patient says it's not economic

The treatment options for partially edentulous condition are removable prosthesis and fixed prosthesis. For decades metal ceramic restoration is the treatment of choice when fixed restoration is concerned.  Application of cad cam technology in dentistry expels the conventional method of fabrication of fixed prosthesis. Advancement in all ceramic restorative material provides better strength compared with metal ceramic restoration. In spite of its good aesthetics all ceramic restorations are not popular in rural areas because of its cost factor. The dental practitioners are also not advising the patients for all ceramic restorations. This leads to unawareness of all ceramic restorations in rural areas. This study shows the patients from rural area seeking dental treatment have less awareness regarding all ceramic restorations. Significant patients feel that all ceramic restoration fractures easily when compared to metal ceramic restorations.

CONCLUSION:

The study shows  56 % of patients are not aware of all ceramic restorations. Hence there is only moderate awareness in rural population.  All ceramic restorations are mainly preferred for aesthetics. The dental practitioners should have an updated knowledge about the advancement in restorative materials and explain the patients so that the patients will be benefited with recent advances.
